These indices provide a quantitative measure of vegetation vigour and moisture availability, but cannot diagnose the causes of observed changes, predict the effects of specific interventions, or document species-specific plant community types.

Early stage rehabilitation can be dominated by grasses and weedy species. A high NDVI reading does not confirm target species are establishing, and a declining reading may reflect a natural transition to slower-growing vegetation.
