Vegetation and bare ground cover

Target: Vegetative groundcover ≥ 70% on outward-facing slopes and ≥ 30% on inward-facing slopes; no bare areas > 10 m².

The site is at an early recovery stage, with 36.2% total vegetation cover across 4 ha – well below the >70% target, and no assessed area currently meets the cover threshold. Ground vegetation (under 1 m) accounts for 23.4% (0.9 ha) and mid-story (1–10 m) for 8.6% (0.3 ha), with only 4.2% canopy established so far. Bare ground dominates the surface at 63.8% (2 ha), including 30 bare patches larger than 10 m² (the largest 5,780 m²). Surface stabilisation and vegetation establishment are the primary constraints requiring active management.

Vegetation health trajectory

Target: Achievement and maintenance of a stable vegetation condition over time.

The multi-year satellite record (2020–2026, 318 scenes) shows an early, near-flat trajectory rather than active recovery. Site vegetation vigour (NDVI 0.275) sits well below the 0.580 analogue Woodland target and is improving only marginally (trend +0.0080/year), with just 13.8% of the site improving and 86.2% stable – which projects to roughly 86.7 years to reach the target on the current trend. Vegetation moisture (NDMI -0.228) is further below its 0.200 target and slightly declining. Establishing a defensible analogue reference and actively accelerating establishment are the priorities to bend this trajectory upward.

Maximum slope indicators

Target: Maximum overall slope gradient within limits (≤ 15% grade); landforms geotechnically stable, with minimal erosion and no gullying or active scour.

Continue and intensify the monitoring baseline.

Progress to quarterly remote sensing updates for vegetation vigour and moisture seasonality against the established analogue reference, and continue drone mapping on a six-month to annual basis to track bare-ground stabilisation and vegetation establishment. Given current cover and bare-ground levels, pair this with active surface stabilisation and revegetation so subsequent captures can measure management effectiveness.

Time additional vegetation cover assessments to capture green-up.

Schedule further drone cover assessments to coincide with peak green-up on site – using the satellite trajectory data to identify when vegetation response is strongest – so cover results reflect the site at its best-established rather than being under-represented by a poorly-timed capture.

Identify appropriate analogue reference sites.

We recommend assessing your rehabiliation against suitable analogue or reference sites. This will de-risk your reporting in periods of extreme climate conditions, and ensure your targets are relevant to your local area and climate.

Explore a higher-frequency automated capture workflow.

Scope an automated (e.g. monthly) LiDAR/drone data workflow to provide earlier detection of erosion hotspots and vegetation trend changes than the current cadence allows, so intervention can happen before issues become compliance-critical.

Establish long-term data integrity and control processes.

Put preservation, versioning, and chain-of-custody processes in place so the monitoring record remains intact, comparable, and demonstrable across the full rehabilitation timeline.

Add long-term rainfall and climate context.

Overlay long-term rainfall and weather statistics on the vegetation cover and trajectory data to help explain observed patterns, and use this to identify a data-informed optimal time of year for planting.
